The Kiridashi Kogatana knife is a traditional all-purpose Japanese laminated knife used for marking, trimming, & shaping woodworking & bamboo. The top of the blade has a right hand bevel edge with the back side flat & hollow ground for easy re-sharpening.
Mr. Ikeuchi master blacksmith along with his fellow blacksmiths hand forge, grind, & sharpen these knives. White high carbon steel laminated on top with a softer layer of steel allowing the blade to be hardened to Rockwell 64. With all steel as it becomes harder & tougher, it will be more brittle & can snap in half, the soft steel lamination arrests this possibility. These knives we carry from Mr. Ikeuchi are beveled ground on one side only & flat to edge on the underside yet hollow ground as a common practice to facilitate less time in re-honing to a sharp edge.

High quality, affordable kiridashi
Great little knife! I got it to practice stone polishing. Great price for a good knife. Well made and takes a polish easily.
More bang for your buck.
First off I'm not a wood worker and I bought this mainly for opening Amazon's boxes, the price is great and the shipping was fast. The only negatives is the OOTB edge was like a 3/10 and the shinogi surface has some low spot, I tried to even it out as much as I could with my Naniwa 400 and finish it on the Sigma 13K. I don't have any Jnats but if you want a nice Kasumi finish with a synthetic stone the King 800 or King 1K would be a nice choice.
Japanese marking knife
Excellent product, fast shipping! Terrific experience and I will continue to by from you. Thanks!
Expect some minor work and you'll be rewarded with a perfect knife
In terms of things Hardwick & Sons can control: this is an excellent quality knife at a wonderful price with well priced shipping. Like most forge-welded White label steel, occasionally you'll find that it has a tendency to warp as it cools slightly, especially with a razor sharp and thin tip. Be prepared to have a flat stone (oil, water, whatever, so long as it's dead flat) and be prepared to true the knife (you only need to flatten the very tip; everything else is wasted effort since you're not using it as a dagger), and in turn you'll get a knife that holds a wicked edge, doesn't bend/buckle/warp, and treats you well until you eventually sharpen it to a nub.
Great kiridashi
Ikeuchi Hamono makes great knives. He is a well respected blacksmith primarily making tool knives as well as a few kitchen knives. Great price. Great product. Great service. Can't ask for much more
