fabulous tool at a fabulous price!

I will never buy the knock-off sickle-saw at big box stores again. Hardwick's has quality tools that are often much less expensive than I would expect. Wonderful tool, great store!

Yes You Need This

Being an avid gardener for the past 40 years I thought I had invested in every tool out there for my needs. After hearing myriads of praise about Japanese hand tools and their expert craftsmanship, I became intrigued by the gardening world's obsession with nokogamas. Research for an authentic Japanese one led me to a few sites but it was Hardwick & Sons' that got my attention. Theirs are attractively priced with simple, to the point descriptions for each and are genuine - made of carbon steel with the Made in Japan stamp on the blade. I decided upon this size nokogama to help me cut back weeds, perennials, ferns, vines, and just about anything else that has a stem. Also got the smaller one for more detailed work such as scraping the weeds between the cracks in my sidewalk or cutting sod. They come with clear plastic covers that snap closed which is a good thing because they are SHARP! Both sickles have smooth wooden handles that fit comfortably in my medium sized hand. I've never been a fan of tools with wooden handles until now. They are surprisingly lightweight, easy to carry, and effortless to use. Makes clearing out the perennial beds a breeze. What used to take me an hour or more to cut back due to having to stop every so often to clean my clippers of all sap and dirt that would cause them to stick is no longer an issue when using this hand sickle. Earlier today I elected to use it instead of my machete to cut back my banana plants in preparation for winterization. The space was way too tight and there was no way I was going to be able to get a clean cut with a machete, but this nokogama fit right in there and had no trouble slicing through the 8" stems. After how many months of cutting with these things, they're still as sharp as the day I got them. These are not for cutting twigs or branches as their blades are more a type of serrated teeth. Easy to clean with tsubaki oil and a rust eraser block. I would also like to give proper credit to Hardwick & Sons for their excellent customer service! Placed my order and it was shipped right away with complete tracking information. Order arrived within 2 days all the way from WA to NY with not even a dent in the package. Items were neatly wrapped in bubblewrap with no damages. Inside was a lovely little handwritten note of thanks for being a customer. Simple gestures like that speak volumes about the kind of individuals who work at H&S but also their dedication to and humble appreciation for their customers which one cannot get from certain online merchants nor their big box counterparts. Thank you Hardwick & Sons for a wonderful shopping experience! You have a customer for life!

Nokogama Sickle-Saw

The Nokogama Sickle-Saw is a treasure of a tool. Makes short work out of harvesting cabbage heads and other tough foliage that needs to be cut. Great for older hands, too.

    About Carbon Steel

High carbon steel is tougher & harder than stainless steels, making it ideal & desirable for applications where durability is required & where frequent regrinding is needed. Carbon steels are more durable & have razor-sharp edges, & is easy to re-sharpen as well when the need arises.
