       About Shellac

Shellac is a natural resin made by the Lac bug that makes a traditional finish for wood & fine furniture. It's attractive & quick-drying, & may be used as a sealant or used as a primer for other finishes. It can block odors & seal in stains while at the same time providing a surface that most paints & finishes can stick to easily.

       Preparation

       •    Shellac finish is prepared by dissolving flakes in alcohol. A typical ratio for brushing is 2 lb. of flakes for every gallon of alcohol, & is called a "two-pound cut".

       •    To prepare, combine alcohol & flakes in a glass jar & let soak for 3 to 6 hours, agitating occasionally. For faster dissolve times, agitate more frequently. Mix shellac on an as-needed basis because dissolved shellac has a shelf life of no more than 6 months.  For un-used flakes, store in a airtight container such as a mason jar & keep in a dry & cool environment.
