Great axe!

It’s a great axe! I’m very happy with it. The tip of the blade was chipped when it arrived, but not an issue I’d remove a star for.

Great product, quick shipping

I'd compare it to getting a Brazilian wax from a knife-throwing troupe, or perhaps a radioactive colonic, were the latter a pleasurable experience, of course.

Great Japanese Design and Craftsmanship

I absolutely love this axe. I prefer Japanese woodworking tools over everything else and this is no different. It's versatile, well balanced, holds a sharp edge, and gets the job done.

How would a carpenter use this axe?

I can’t figure out what this axe will do well. While I liked the look and was hopeful about how it might function as a carving axe, now that I’ve used it, only my affection for the looks of it is intact. I’d thought a carpenter would use an axe primarily for hewing rather than chopping or splitting, and the long beard of this axe supports that notion, The bevel on a good hewing axe generally makes for good carving, too, and the size of this axe is just right for that. The bevel, though, is where this axe befuddles me. It’s too obtuse to do anything but split, but the way the handle is attached (plus the warning sticker) makes batonning inadvisable. The head is such a wide chunk of metal, that any attempt at a suitable regrind would take hours to pull the bevel far enough back for this axe to be able to slice. Also, the squared edges and the ******* metal attachment at the top of the handle, plus the minimal clearance behind the beard make choking up (which a beard usually excels at) pretty uncomfortable). All of that said, it’s a nice piece of steel, and I imagine there’s a particular way this axe is meant to be used by a Japanese carpenter. It would be great for that use to be specified in the description. One last disappointment: the wedge was driven in such a sloppy and haphazard way - off-center, and causing the head of the handle to shatter rather than swell to fit. As for H & Sons, they packed it and had it shipped to me in two days. Can’t complain about that.

  • This Japanese axe is a specially designed, & traditional Japanese carpenter's axe. It is excellent for woodworking due to the distinctive shape of the axe head which permits one's hand directly behind the axe head & blade for precise carving & woodwork, gripping almost straight above the center of the cutting edge for stability & control. The head is made of forged steel & the blade keeps a very sharp edge. An excellent axe for your woodworking needs, & also good for light hewing for small kindling pieces. *Note: Not designed for heavy striking and hewing.
