A quality Kusakichi Bachi Gata hand hoe forged in one solid head piece. Made of high carbon steel, the blade is very sharp & cuts tough weeds & roots with ease. The hoe is also good for harvesting & cultivating soil. The blade is slightly curved which helps dig into the soil easily. The blade also easily resharpens when the need arises. It is also a good idea to tap in the wedge on the top of the handle occasionally, since the hardwood handle may expand & shrink over time due to moisture. Very handy tool. Perfect for smaller jobs where a full size mattock would be overkill, but where the ground is too hard or tough for a long handle hoe. I enjoy working the land by hand whenever I can. I find it relaxing, but the day is long and you need to spread the work load across your body to take full advantage of it. So many tasks sock it to your lower back, so I bought two of these to hammer the ground like a drummer, give my arms some action, and let my back take a breather. They work surprisingly fast on turf, slicing through the roots and into the soil with ease. I first used them to dig a shallow trench about 30' long through thick turf and tough clay to divert storm water overflow from my house and was done in minutes! I just squatted low to the ground and hammered away with pleasure - zero pressure on my lower back.

You can't believe the ease and effectiveness of this tool. It is light yet powerful enough to break through hardened dirt. I highly recommend it.

The tool looks beautiful, strong, and well designed. The blade is not quite as wide as an earlier one I was given years ago, but looks like it will do exactly what I got it for, mostly to transplant. I got one for me and one as a gift for another gardener. I would recommend the tool and the vendor to any gardener.

My Gardening Tool of Choice
I have been using a hand mattock for planting and weeding for decades. It's easier to use than a trowel or hand fork. I'm happy to find a replacement and a source for gift giving.
